Architectural Chimney Construction, Restoration & Repair

A chimney is far more than a decorative stack on your roofline. It is a complex, hard-working ventilation system subjected to extreme thermal stress on the inside and brutal weather conditions on the outside. In Indiana, where temperatures swing from sub-zero winter nights to scorching summer days, chimneys face severe degradation from water infiltration and freeze-thaw expansion. Knox Services offers comprehensive chimney services to keep your home safe, efficient, and beautiful:

We design and build custom brick, natural stone, and cultured stone chimneys tailored to match your home’s architectural style.
From traditional colonial brick stacks to massive, rugged stone statements on rustic estates, our chimneys are engineered for optimal draft performance and structural permanence.

Tuckpointing and Mortar Restoration

Mortar joints naturally degrade faster than the brick or stone they hold together.
If missing or cracked mortar is left unaddressed, water enters the structure, rotting surrounding wood and destabilizing the wall. Our masons carefully grind out failed mortar to precise depths and replace it with specialized formulas color-matched to your original structure.

Brick Spalling Repair

When water penetrates a brick and freezes, it expands, causing the face of the brick to pop off or crumble.
This is known as spalling. We carefully extract damaged bricks and replace them with structurally sound units that blend with your existing masonry.

Concrete Crown Reconstruction

The concrete cap at the very top of your chimney is your first line of defense against weather. Standard crowns are often poured flat or thin, leading to rapid cracking.
The Knox Services masonry team builds custom-cast, reinforced concrete crowns with a sloped design and an overhanging drip edge to shed water completely away from the brickwork below.

Integrated Counter-Flashing System Upgrades

The number one source of roof leaks is improper flashing around the base of the chimney.
Because Knox Services houses both elite masons and master roofers, we install two-piece counter-flashing systems. We cut a deep groove into the mortar joint, insert heavy-gauge metal flashing, seal it permanently, and lap it over the roofing underlayment. This creates an impenetrable barrier against wind-driven rain and snow.

Architectural Masonry Facades & Full Home Veneers

The exterior walls of your home are what the world sees first. Changing a faded siding exterior to a premium masonry facade completely transforms the identity of your home, while vastly increasing its insulation value, fire rating, and structural mass.

Full-Bed Natural Stone & Brick Veneers

For the ultimate in luxury and longevity, we install full-thickness face brick and dimensional natural quarry stone.
This requires advanced structural footings and tie-in engineering, delivering an imposing, timeless aesthetic that lasts for centuries.

Thin Stone Veneer Panels

If your home's existing foundation cannot support the massive weight of full-bed stone, we install premium thin stone veneers.
Crafted from real natural stone cut to a fraction of the thickness, or ultra-realistic manufactured stone, these veneers give you the exact visual impact of a solid stone wall without the need for costly foundation modifications.

Mixed-Media Exterior Design

Our unique operational structure shines brightest when creating mixed-media facades.
We can craft a stunning first-story facade using rugged ashlar stone masonry, and transition seamlessly into premium James Hardie fiber-cement siding or natural cedar shakes on the gables and upper levels. This creates an eye-catching, multi-textured exterior handled entirely by one expert team.

Other Masonry Services

The exterior walls of your home are what the world sees first. Changing a faded siding exterior to a premium masonry facade completely transforms the identity of your home, while vastly increasing its insulation value, fire rating, and structural mass.

Luxury Walkways, Patios & Terraces

The pathway to your front door or the terrace in your backyard sets the tone for your entire property.
Cheap poured concrete slabs crack, stain, and pit over time. Knox Services creates gorgeous, durable walkways and patios using high-end masonry units designed to handle foot traffic, heavy patio furniture, and intense weather.

Grand Entry Steps & Stoops

Your front steps are the focal point of your entryway. Worn-out, crumbling, or unlevel steps are a major safety hazard and ruin your home's curb appeal.
Knox Services designs and constructs grand entry staircases that provide safe, stable, and visually striking access to your home.

Our Proven Craftsmanship Process

We believe that an enjoyable, stress-free construction experience is just as important as the quality of the final build. Over the years, Knox Services has developed a clear, step-by-step process that keeps you informed, protected, and confident from start to finish.

Step 1: Detailed On-Site Consultation

We start by sending an experienced exterior design specialist to your home for a comprehensive walkthrough. We listen to your ideas, look at your home's current style, take precise measurements, and evaluate your property's soil and drainage conditions.

Step 2: Custom Design, Engineering, and Estimating

Next, we create a detailed project plan. This includes material samples, a clear, line-by-line cost estimate, and a realistic project schedule. For large structures like retaining walls, our team handles all structural designs and pulls the necessary local building permits.

Step 3:Site Preparation and Property Protection

Before we mix any mortar, we protect your home and landscaping. We lay down heavy plywood boards to protect your lawn from machinery, wrap your landscaping in protective netting, and set up clear safety barriers around the work zone.

Step 4: Expert Masonry Installation

Our master masons get to work, building your project according to strict local building codes. We handle every detail with care, from digging deep foundations and setting perfect levels to laying down beautiful, consistent mortar joints.

Step 5: Roof, Siding, and Gutter Integration

Knox Services installs new shingles or metal panels using high-wind fastening techniques. Ask about rating for high MPH winds.

Step 6: Final Walkthrough and Project Cleanup

Our roofing installers will conduct a thorough inspection and sweep for loose nails and debris to ensure your yard is safe for family and pets.

Comprehensive External Integration: The Knox Advantage

The biggest benefit of choosing Knox Services is our ability to handle your entire exterior renovation at once.

When you combine our custom masonry with our roofing, siding, and gutter divisions, you get a perfectly sealed, beautiful home exterior that works as a unified system.

1. Seamless Roofing Integration

Your roof and your masonry structures—especially chimneys and parapet walls—must work together perfectly to keep water out.

2. High-End Siding Transitions

Combining stone masonry with modern siding is a great way to boost your home’s curb appeal. However, the spots where these two materials meet are highly vulnerable to water leaks if not handled correctly.

3. Advanced Gutter and Water Control Systems

A beautiful new masonry installation can be quickly ruined if roof water is left to pour directly onto it. Uncontrolled water runoff stains stone, washes away mortar joints, and cracks walkways.

Fully Insured

Roof installation is serious business, and Knox Services takes it seriously by being fully insured.

Our Clients Love Us

"The folks at Knox put on a new roof and new siding/gutters for us this past summer, at two different times with two different crews. We ran into a few roadblocks--like having to create a "cricket" on the roof to divert water to another direction, or having to bring in the "window guys" to stabilize old windows as new siding was going on. Matt and C'Koh just took care of it and brought in whoever needed to do the work--and they even managed to do all the work without damaging the flowers and shrubs! I would highly recommend them--excellent customer service and really nice people!"
Called Knox and set up an appointment with Heather to inspect an area of the roof with a possible hole reported to me by my gutter cleaner. Mark Savage phoned prior to the appointment to confirm appointment and arrival time. Mark found a bad area in a ridge cap and a vent pipe boot that was dry and cracking. Instead of making an appointment for a future repair he found some materials on his truck and made both repairs at that time. The charge was minimal and the problems were fixed. The whole experience with Knox was very positive. They made little to no profit on this job but created a long time customer. Now I know why you see their trucks and signs all over town. Give them a call on all your roofing needs. You want be disappointed."

MASONRY FAQ

Can you match the brick on my historic Indiana home?

Yes. Our Lafayette and Brownsburg hubs have deep experience with historic homes. We work closely with specialized brick manufacturers to match the size, color, and texture of your original bricks, and we custom-tint our mortar to blend seamlessly with your existing structure.

How long does a typical custom stone facade installation take?

Most residential facade installations take between one and three weeks, depending on the size of your home and the style of stone you choose. When you combine this with siding or roofing work, our integrated team syncs schedules to complete the entire exterior project with virtually no downtime.

What is the difference between natural stone and cultured stone veneers?

Natural stone veneer is cut directly from real quarried stone. It offers unmatched durability and unique color variations, but it is heavier and more expensive. Cultured stone is cast from concrete molds and colored with iron oxides. It looks incredibly realistic, weighs much less, and is often a more budget-friendly option that doesn't require extra foundation support.

Do I need to seal my new masonry installation?

While high-quality brick and stone are naturally durable, applying a premium, breathable silane-siloxane sealer is highly recommended for structures exposed to harsh weather, like chimneys, walkways, and patios. This clear coating keeps water from soaking into the stone while allowing internal moisture to escape, preventing stains and freeze-thaw damage.

How does your team handle project cleanup?

We treat your property with the utmost respect. We use protective boards to keep heavy equipment from damaging your lawn, rake and sweep work areas daily, and perform thorough cleanups with rolling magnets to collect stray nails or metal scraps before we hand over the final project.
